Since we we’ve been fighting various colds and flus since January (the ho-hum weather on the weekends also didn’t help) we didn’t get to go on any hikes in the last couple of months. Our plans for last weekend were almost foiled by Noam since he started to get sick again on Friday night but thank God he was better on Sunday so we were finally able to go on a long planned hike. Plus it always helps to be in nature and breath fresh air.
This hike is a roughly 5 miles long loop trail. It took us 4 hours including many snack and photo breaks. If (like in our case) the days leading up to the hike are rainy we recommend to bring hiking poles as the narrow paths can get very muddy and slippery.
We started at the Wanderparkplatz Hohenwittlingen. We were surprised as to how little people we met there and on the trail, especially for a Sunday afternoon. When I planned the hike I did not know how beautiful it was going to be. It’s a perfect hike for kids! Rock formations, crevices you can walk through, outlooks over the valley, castle ruins, a waterfall and a cave (one note in regards to the cave: It’s only open from 15th of May to 15th of November in order to protect the bats) – this hike really has it all! Since there’s always „one more thing“ it’s easy to get the kids motivated (not that our kids needed it ;)).
If you have time to spare afterwards we recommend you to also go to the Ermstalfischerei and get fresh & smoked trout. Unfortunately we did not have the time but we’ll try to stop there again next time we’re in the area.
